In solidarity with The “Online Pilgrimage for Justice” by RECOWA and AFSA, Caritas Ghana has embarked on a Validation Meeting on the draft land policy report by Dr. Patrick Tandoh-Offin. Caritas Ghana also held a National strategy meeting to gather efforts effort of the Civil Society Organization and Faith-Based Organization to streamline advocacy strategies on land governance and practices which undermine the poor and destroy the earth.

This is being done in partnership with the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA), a broad alliance of civil society actors working together to promote food sovereignty and agroecology in Africa

At the core of our demand for land justice, secure the interest of the poor in regards to land rights, access and use and protection against multinational companies and their harmful international operations, saving our common home from the impending climate implosion. Caritas Ghana wants to use his online pilgrimage to also reiterate the commitment of the Church to Caring for our Common Home (the earth)

The Bishops of Ghana, inspired by Pope Francis’ teachings in his Encyclical on the care of our common home, have put together a 5-year Laudato sí Action Programme scheduled to run from 2022 to 2026. This latest initiative of the Ghanaian Bishops aims to achieve seven global Laudato Sí goals which center around responding to the cry of the earth; responding to the cry of the poor; ecological economics; adoption of sustainable lifestyles; ecological education; ecological spirituality, as well as community engagement and participatory action.

The priority is on reforestation, regeneration and restoration of degraded lands. The Bishops from the 5 Dioceses of the Northern Savannah Area (Northern Province) are seriously concerned about large portions of Community Lands that have been laid waste by various human activities (gravel winning, over-grazing, bush burning, surface mining, deforestation for charcoal etc) A deliberate effort over a sustained period of 10 – 25 years is needed, together with the communities, to bring back these lands to any productive use.
